Sudar (“Light”
in Tamil)
In 2002, Sudar Foundation (WEP’s
pilot project) was formed in Madurai,
South India to offer first generation
college learners scholarships and a specialized
supplemental curriculum. Guided by a local
board of directors, a three-person staff
and six part-time teachers, Sudar offers
classes to foster confidence and success
in higher education. Classes include English,
computers, study skills, teacher training,
professional skills, environment and health.
The center also provides a library, computer
lab, study rooms and a career resource
center.
Since 2002, over 300
students have attended Sudar’s classes
and workshops and over 75 have received
scholarships.
In 2007-2008, 25 students
received scholarships to area colleges
and over 50 students attend Sudar’s
support curriculum.
Now in its fifth year,
Sudar’s graduates are paralegals,
designers, and teachers at trade and elementary
schools.
Building on our initial
success with Sudar, the Women’s
Education Project is working to establish
more international partnerships to take
the Sudar “light” to women
throughout the world.
